New York - Daily life returned nearly back to normal Thursday in New York City a day after a steam pipe exploded in the heart of the city, reminding residents of similar scenes of the September 11 terrorist attacks six years ago. The huge subway network serving millions of daily commuters in the city of 8 million people was running as normal. But some lines of public buses were still barred from areas around Grand Central Terminal, the major hub for subways and trains to the suburbs in Manhattan and off the island.
Residential and commercial blocks around the location were still cordoned off because amid a continuing cleanup by city authorities at the site of the explosion at 41st and Lexington Avenue. Local news reports said the cleanup would take days to complete and repair the steam pipe, which was built in 1924.
The explosion during the evening rush hour Wednesday caused the death of one person and injured more than a dozen others. It caused chaos in mid-town, but New York City Hall immediately discounted the possibility that it was not a terrorist act. The single death was a woman who ran from the explosion site and died of a heart attack.
The steam pipe explosion dug a huge crater in the area, engulfing a tow truck and paralyzing buses and cars nearby. Some reports said the heavy downpour on Wednesday could have contributed to the accident by raising pressure on the pipe when rain water seeped down the concrete pavement.
The powerful explosion sent a plume of white smoke up as high as the 77-floor Chrysler Building located near Grand Central. Even as the steam lost pressure, smoke continued to shoot up into the air for two hours before hundreds of firefighters were able to put it down.
Reports said city officials and police were investigating the accident.
